Free one-day citizenship and Europe event for young people
Friday 10 July 2009 - Newcastle
A great opportunity for young people to meet MEPs, learn more about European democratic structures and issues and put forward, explore and develop their points of view in a lively and engaging way.
We are pleased to invite young people to attend our free citizenship and Europe event for the North East, which we are running on behalf of the European Parliament UK Office. The following regional MEPs have so far confirmed their attendance on the day: Fiona Hall (Liberal Democrat) and Stephen Hughes (Labour).
We have recently run highly successful similar events in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
About the events
Based on the theme of citizenship and Europe, the events have been planned by drawing on our considerable experience of organising highly interactive and engaging events for young people. They offer a great opportunity for young people to meet MEPs, learn more about European democratic structures and issues and put forward, explore and develop their points of view in a lively and engaging way.
Aims and benefits:
- to raise awareness of how Europe is governed (in particular the role and powers of the European Parliament) and some of the main issues affecting the European Union today
- to encourage young people to think about the sort of Europe they want to be part of and what action we need to take to achieve this
- to provide a platform for the views of young people on European issues, such as the environment, migration, poverty, international security
- to provide an opportunity for young people to hear the views of elected Members of the European Parliament and exchange views with them
What previous participants have said
"I learnt a lot about the EU and how I fit into it" (Learner)
"A great mix between serious information and entertainment" (Staff)
"I learnt loads of stuff I didn’t know about the European union" (Learner)
" ..today has enlightened me and I have now formed my own opinions on England’s situation within the EU" (Learner)
