Enjoy all that Islington Has to Offer at a Fraction of the Rental Costs

Islington is one of the best places to live in London, but is also among the most expensive. The neighbouring area of Canonbury offers the perfect solution.

From the clubs and bars of Upper Street to the bohemian mix of vintage clothes shops and antique stalls on Camden Passage, everyone loves Islington. Unfortunately, this fantastic neighbourhood is not what you might call a well-kept secret, and for years now, people have been queueing up to come and live here.

Of course, this means that property prices are rapidly disappearing into the stratosphere. However, there is a solution for mere mortals to enjoy everything that Islington has to offer, and that is by looking to find flats to rent in Canonbury – this beautiful and unspoilt corner of London is less than 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Upper Street, yet provides an oasis of calm, at a fraction of the cost.

Who wants to live in Canonbury?

With its tranquil paved areas and gardens and the nearby Regents Canal with its restaurants and pubs overlooking the water, it is sometimes difficult to believe that you are so close to one of the world’s largest metropolitan hubs.

There is a mixture of properties available, including traditional Victorian residences, modern new builds and some of the most imaginative redevelopments of former industrial warehouses and schools that you will ever see.

No wonder the area has proved so popular throughout the years with those who like to think a little outside the box – famous residents have included George Orwell, Evelyn Waugh and more recently Alan Davies, Keira Knightley and Cate Blanchett.

Neighbouring Islington

There are few better places to visit, day or night, than vibrant Islington. If it is a meal you are looking for, then there is something for all tastes – there is a good reason why journalists have started calling Upper Street “Supper street.”

In addition to the huge range of shops and stalls that have made the area so famous, there are also plenty of cultural distractions, most notably, the world-famous Almeda Theatre. If cinema is more your thing, check out the retro appeal of the Screen on the Green, where there is always something a little out of the ordinary to see.

Getting around

Essex Road mainline station whisks passengers into Moorgate in a matter of just five minutes, or stroll a further ten minutes through beautiful Islington and you will reach Angel underground station, from which it is just three stops into the heart of the city.

The whole area is also served by numerous bus routes, meaning that anywhere in London or beyond is within easy reach.

What to pay

Make no mistake, the cat is fast escaping the bag as far as Canonbury is concerned, but right now, there are still some highly affordable rentals that bring this highly desirable  neighbourhood within even the most modest budget.

One bedroom apartments can still be found in the sub-£1,500 bracket, while three bedroom properties start around the £2,200 mark.

At the opposite end of the scale, there are beautiful and iconic London townhouses to be found in the £5,000 – £6,000 price range.
