Our strands of work

Standards development
National new e-learning CPD framework

In the current climate of workforce and qualification reforms in the sector, the development of the education workforce is a key priority area. LSN are addressing this priority through the a new national CPD framework for quality improvement in e-learning

For busy education professionals who wish to build on their current knowledge, skills and understanding of e- learning effective practice, the framework will provide flexible CPD routes for achievement, enabling staff to build their own learning programme according to individual needs.

LSN are collaborating with key partner organisations in the learning and skills sector including LLUK. IfL, QCA, DfES, Niace and others to ensure the initiative meets the needs of the diverse educational workforce.

If you are interested in further information about the initiative including details about consultation activities please contact:

Initial Teacher Training

The LSN In collaboration with partnership organisations in the LSC has recognized the need to work towards transforming teacher training through a strategy of embedding e-learning in ITT. This project will produce models that will enable institutions to successfully embed e-learning into teacher training through the production of effective project outcomes

In collaboration with partners in the LSC sector, the embedding of e-learning in ITT will be developed through effective professional activities and practitioner-based action research projects that result in:

  • a range of models and approaches to identify good practice
  • a promotional resource pack for initial teacher training

Nine projects have been commissioned on the basis of:

  • Identified need
  • Product production
  • Regional spread
  • Type of institution

These nine projects will contribute towards the development of a support pack for initial teacher trainers that will be published at the end of the project. This will also act as action-based research projects and be expected to provide research data reports.

ICT Skills Development

ICT Skills development is part of a comprehensive workforce development programme undertaken by the Learning and Skills Network.  Its main purpose is to assist in the development of contextualised ICT skills acquisition for teaching staff and those that directly support teaching and learning.  ICT Skills development is putting into practice the priorities outlined in the DfES e-learning strategy.  The strategy acknowledges that a greater focus on technology will produce real benefits for all.

The main purpose of this work is to:

  • Improved professional knowledge and skills in ICT
  • Develop contextualised ICT resource and training in subject areas where they

are not yet well developed

  • Train tutors/trainers to become familiar with new resources applied to a learning context.
  • Provide tools and approaches to delivery that would enable them to embed the skills into their teaching programmes
  • Ensure tutors/teachers taking part in the training share their experiences and expertise and apply the training in their own contexts
  • Provide further materials and learning strategies that model a useful framework for other CPD work
  • Develop strategies for practitioners to share ideas and expertise with colleagues from a range of subject areas
  • Build on existing good practice and support the embedding of ICT skills into curriculum delivery

ICT skills development - e-learning developer

The focus of the programme is to deliver appropriately framed web technology training based on the LSDA track record of delivering a series of highly successful web authoring events during the lifetime of the QUILT and NLN programmes such as ASP.NET, visual web developer 2005 express edition and creating interactive teaching and learning materials using Flash.

The target audience includes web managers, elearning content developers, curriculum developers and technical and teaching staff in colleges targeting 20 delegates per event using designated laptops and the latest version of relevant and appropriate software.  Events operate on a modular basis as a series of one or two day residentials in the North West and South West of England.

Full details of the web authoring events are available at www.learningtechnologies.ac.uk/ask or contact Steve Butler sbutler@ccm.ac.uk

Q Projects and the Staff Development Practitioners Network – Geoff Foot

There is a wealth of useful information in the post-16 sector on implementing simple but effective examples of using e-learning in teaching and learning - almost too much! How do you find out quickly and easily what others in your subject/field consider effective practice in the use of e-learning? LSDA has been involved in developmental projects for a number of years, for example between 2003 -2005 approximately 240 Q projects have been running and it is anticipated that nearly 200 outputs with 7GB of material will be available to the sector. DVDs for series 1 and 2 are still available and if you want a copy please complete the form on www.learningtechnologies.ac.uk/qdvd.asp?area=34.

This fourth year brings a change - the emphasis now to develop a NEW comprehensive database of "e-learning in action  - examples of effective practice". This new area will be available from October 2005 on www.learningtechnologies.ac.uk/ask

Evaluating e-learning

Transformation projects what happened next?

Longitudinal research and evaluation by LSN is examining what constitutes effective practice in e-learning and what are the hurdles and barriers to embedding this in organisations. A new study is looking at the longer-term impact of the 'transformation projects' and will produce entries for the "examples of effective practice" database at www.learningtechnologies.ac.uk/ask

The nine transformation projects managed by LSDA ran from March 2004 and reported in March 2005. Some featured at the LSDA/ALT E-Learning Making it work Conference for practitioners on 13th October 2005. The projects used NLN funding in an attempt to ‘transform’ an aspect of teaching and learning. The projects adopted a better-resourced approach to what has become a tried and tested route to effective e-learning development in the sector: the funding of staff time to concentrate on action-based projects in a specified area of work.

This new study follows earlier successful evaluation work on the impact of e-learning, including within the National Learning Network, the Wireless Outreach Networks initiative, skills for life, and in adult and community learning (which included a handbook co-authored by Kevin Donovan, LSDA and Alison Page, Becta aimed at ACL tutors: 'e-learning: a workbook for ACL'.). Details of these can be found at

Self-assessment tool

Visit www.learningtechnologies.ac.uk

The self-assessment tool has been developed from the FENTO ILT standards by the LSDA as part of the e-learning and technology initiative.  It enables institutions to measure the extent to which they have embedded e-learning into teaching and learning and to identify priorities for development.

It links to the staff development events and resources database so that appropriate staff development opportunities may be identified.  Colleges that complete the self-assessment exercise will see a confidential customized report.
