  • Sustainable development in the learning and skills sector: a national baseline surveySustainable development in the learning and skills sector: a national baseline survey
This report outlines the results of a national survey on current practice in sustainable development in the learning and skills sector. The survey was carried out following the publication of From here to sustainability – the Learning and Skills Council strategy on education for sustainable development. The survey assessed how sustainable development was being addressed in the four key areas of leadership and management, buildings and estates, teaching and learning programmes and community and business. There is evidence that the learning and skills sector is making progress on implementing the sustainable development agenda in most areas.

  • LSDA Responds: From here to sustainabilityLSDA Responds: From here to sustainability
This is LSDA’s response to the strategy for sustainable development from the Learning and Skills Council, From here to sustainability. In our response we welcome the aspirations for the economy, society and the wider environment, and the sense of urgency for significant improvement by the learning and skills sector. We structure our response in two parts: first, overarching general points and second, specific reactions to the consultation issues listed in the original document. The consultation is available at www.lsc.gov.uk The supporting document is also available at www.lsc.gov.uk

  • LSDA Reports: Opportunities for sustainable development in the learning and skills sector: a policy analysisLSDA Reports: Opportunities for sustainable development in the learning and skills sector: a policy analysis
Sustainable development (SD) will and should reinforce existing government policy aims and objectives. The Treasury has recently shown its commitment to the SD agenda in the recent Spending review and its decision to include all 15 of the SD headline targets in Public Service Agreements spanning 10 government departments. Approaches to improving employer engagement are a major policy aim of the Skills Strategy and can be enriched by thinking about 'future skills'. The increasing impact of European regulations for integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC) will mean that by 2007 one million people will be working in enterprises run in accordance with SD principles. Have we developed the capacity in the learning and skills sector to respond to this acclerating demand.

  • LSDA’s response to the consultation paper on planning policy statement 1 : creating sustainable communitiesLSDA’s response to the consultation paper on planning policy statement 1 : creating sustainable communities
This is LSDA’s response to consultation paper Planning policy statement 1: creating sustainable communities issued by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

We voice our support for a key policy message set out in the consultation document, namely the need for planning authorities to be mindful of social inclusion as a critical foundation for sustainable development. However, we express reservations about supporting a form of ‘unconstrained growth’ that pays no heed to the environmental and social needs and characteristics of local people. Economic growth can generate new jobs, but local knowledge and skills and the aspiration to gain new skills will be needed if local communities are to benefit. The consultation document was issued in April 2004 and is available here : LSDA’s response was submitted in May 2004.
